Evaluating the episode engagement data
The Engagement Graph uncovers, on average, how long you retained audience members throughout the length of the content. This data is available for each episode, or rolled up to a show level.
The data available from the Show and Episodes Statistics section is unique insight that is able to be obtained when content is consumed via the uStudio mobile application or desktop experience. This view does not account for embedded plays.
Each row in the table below the graph indicates an episode. The episode color corresponds with it's associated line on the graph above. In the table, you'll find the specific number of plays at each progress milestone.
On the graph, the:
- Y-axis represents the total number of plays for any single piece of content. Since the number of plays will vary across episodes, the plays are normalized by percentage.
- X-axis represents the length of the episode. Since the episode lengths will vary, the lengths are normalized by percentage.
Since this data only accounts for the actual plays of the content, the beginning of the episode (0% progress) always shows the number of plays at 100%, as this indicates the initial press of the play button.
Beginning of an episode
During the first 20% of a stream, you will notice some audience drop-off.
It is unusual to see 100% plays make it through the first 20% of content due to several variables, such as:
- Content not aligning with the audience expectation
- Poor network connectivity or audio/video
- Normal daily interruptions
Tips for decreasing initial drop-off:
- Create episode titles that accurately describe the content
- Create episode descriptions that sets proper expectations about the content
- Follow best practices to ensure the host is engaging and energetic
- Publish episodes with high audio quality
Middle of an episode
From approximately 20%-80%, expect to see the number of plays to mostly flatten. Evaluating the rate of drop-off during this time is the best assessment the content’s quality.
While the engagement rate can vary depending on the length of content, by and large, an engaging episode will have a fairly constant number of streams continue through the ‘meat’ of a message.
Tips for engagement through the middle of the episode:
- Create a plan for the episode prior to recording
- Ensure the host does proper research prior to recording, especially on the guest if an interview format
- Solicit and assess the audience's feedback
End of an episode
During the last 10%-20% of the episode, it is normal to find a drop-off as users tend to move on when they hear indications the content is concluding.
Group engagement by shows
When grouping by shows (toggle found at the top of the table under the graph), plays across all episodes in the application are rolled up to create the percentage shown at each progress milestone. Otherwise, the data and trends can be evaluated similar to the methods when grouping by episodes.
